NEW: Spectrophotometer CM-5

A new top-port bench-top Spectrophotometer with unmatched usability designated for the Food, Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industry

Nieuwegein, October 22nd 2009

The new Konica Minolta CM-5 is a highly versatile and extremely easy to use Bench-Top Spectrophotometer with top-port alignment for easy measurement of powders, granules as well as pasty materials in Reflection and transparent or semi transparent liquids and solids in Transmission. Such samples are typically to be found in foods, ingredients, drinks, pharmaceutical, cosmetics as well as many Chemical base products. The CM-5 can be used in “stand alone” mode thanks to the multi language firmware, large colour screen and control key panel, or connected to the optional PC software SpectraMagic NX. The wide field of applications the CM-5 is able to cover is further enhanced as it includes industry specific indices such as Gardner, Iodine, Hazen (APHA), European Pharmacopoeia, and US Pharmacopeia next to all classic colorimetric evaluation systems.

The functional design and flow of operations suits all requirements for easy, flexible and fast routine measurements in a laboratory environment or for production control, with a minimum time for sample preparation and instrument settings. This is assured by functions such as automatic calibration, individual user setting storage on USB stick as well as a unique “Operation Wizard” with illustrated step by step operation guide on the large LCD colour screen in seven languages. With all the advanced functions and features, the compact and lightweight CM-5 is a unique all-rounder instrument for an unprecedented vast range of applications.

Versatility and Simplicity

Requirements for Color measurement in Foods, Ingredients, Flavors & Fragrances, Drinks, Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics and base Chemicals are specifically demanding due to the extreme diversity of sample forms, from solids to powders, granules pasty, liquid to opaque, translucent or transparent, all forms can be found. An instrument to cover this wide range of products must not only be flexible in terms of measurement method but even more in terms of user friendliness and minimum sample preparation time to allow fast routine measurements in the laboratory or in production control.

The new Konica Minolta Bench-Top Spectrophotometer CM-5 offers exactly this combination of versatility and simplicity to cover all the requirements. The top-port concept allows easy sample positioning and measurement of solid samples as well as samples in pasty, granule or powder form in a glass cell. By simply sliding the top cover, opens the large transmission chamber to measure transparent solids, such as foils or glass plates, or all kind of liquids in transmission mode.

Full stand alone functionality is assured by an extensive firmware in seven languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese) and a large full color LCD screen able to present measurement data’s numerically, graphically or just simple Pass/Fail judgment. Other features such as automatic calibration, individual user setting storage on USB stick and a unique “Operation Wizard” make the CM-5 extremely easy to use.

Full-featured integrated instrument

The CM-5 uses a large sphere with a gloss trap to measure sample with specular (di:8°) or without specular (de:8°) components of the surface and a newly developed monochromator with 10nm interval from 360-740 nm. Like in most Konica Minolta instruments, the pulsed xenon flash illumination system assures long life as well as high accuracy on dark samples.

For measurements of samples in Reflections, aperture masks of 30, 8 and 3 mm are available. For easy measurement of pasty and opaque liquids glass cells or Petri-Dish are simply put on the top-port.

The large transmittance chamber allows measurements in Transmission mode (0:180) of solid subjects such as films or glass plates up to 60 mm thickness and in large size. Liquids can be measured with glass or plastic cells of optical path up to 60 mm depending of their transparency level. An optional adapter allows using standard cells with 12.5 mm width which are widely used throughout the industry.

Besides the classic colorimetric evaluation systems, the CM-5 offers measurement results of liquids to be evaluated in terms of industry specific indices (colour scales) such as Gardner, Iodine, Hazen (APHA), European Pharmacopoeia, and US Pharmacopeia.

To allow several persons to use the instrument in parallel and with different instrument settings, the measurement data’s and the instrument settings can be easily stored on a USB stick.

If required, the CM-5 can be connected with the optional PC QC software SpectraMagic NX via USB or an external printer via RS-232C interface.

The full features to cover the vast range of products, the compact and functional design as well as the unprecedented ease of use make the CM-5 a perfect all rounder instrument for routine measurements in the laboratory or in production control.

Konica Minolta Sensing continues to develop precise sensing technology and applications in order to offer solutions matching customer needs and to maintain our status as “essential” for customers.
